After the Dortmund canters’ victory over Nuremberg, the SPIX eleven of the matchday is one-sided and yet surprising: Seven BVB players made it into the best eleven – despite the seven goals but no striker.
Seven. That is undoubtedly the number of the matchday. Borussia Dortmund won 7:0 against 1. FC Nürnberg. This is not only the highest victory of the season so far. In a list of the clearest games in the long history of the Bundesliga, the game makes it into the top 30.
So it’s no wonder that the SPIEGEL Bundesliga sheet music also takes care of the number of match days. Seven BVB professionals have made it into the SPIX eleven. The thought suggests itself: “one per goal”. And yet the best storm in Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s games gets by without an attacker from Dortmund – but not without Borussia. In addition to BVB pros, Gladbacher also dominated this week.
However, Gregor Kobel is in the goal of the SPX eleven. Please who? The man from Hoffenheim made his Bundesliga debut at the TSG 3:1 in Hanover. Coach Julian Nagelsmann spared Oliver Baumann, the regular keeper, “for reasons of load control” in the English Week. Kobel had already played in the DFB Cup. Against Hanover he played again sovereign, showed six parades and could only be overcome by penalty. Kobel even stayed just ahead of Andreas Luthe, who made a major contribution to the Augsburg draw in Munich.
The central defence of the SPIX eleven is exemplary for the entire team: Borussia Dortmund ahead of Borussia Mönchengladbach. It is particularly impressive that Manuel Akanji and Dan-Axel Zagadou both achieve the best score of 100. So they achieved a better score in comparison with all the players on their position in the last two seasons. Akanji (97.6 percent of the passes) and Zagadou (93.1) were excellent in building up the game. Akanji also scored a goal and won all his duels, Zagadou had the most ball actions (142) and had top scores in clearing actions (seven), intercepted balls (three) and acquired ball possession (nine times). So Matthias Ginter and Nico Elvedi could not keep up (places three and four).
The next hundred: Achraf Hakimi also achieved the highest possible score on the position of the outer defender. Just like Akanji and Zagadou, BVB’s excellent overall performance plays a major role. In addition, there are many ball actions (116), a strong pass rate (94.6 percent) and a goal at the debut of the Real Madrid rental player. Louis Beyer, on the outside, is a Gladbach player who had rotated into the starting eleven in his 3-1 win over Frankfurt. He shone in the SPIX data especially in the ball conquest. For 45 minutes it looked as if Düsseldorf could also score against Leverkusen. The Fortuna had the better chances and in Marcel Sobottka a strong protection, Leverkusen did not give a goal shot. But then the game tilted. Maybe that’s the reason why Sobottka only finished second. Thomas Delaney, on the other hand, made it into the SPIX eleven for the first time as a Dortmund player. Together with Akanji and Zagadou, he structured his team’s game – and also benefited in the overall standings from the strong performance of his team-mates.
Several young players also convinced the BVB. In the SPIX, two 20-year-olds also occupy the offensive outer positions: Together, Christian Pulisic (template) and Jacob Bruun Larsen (finale) scored the first goal and started the Dortmund gala appearance. Bruun Larsen also scored a goal for Marco Reus, Pulisic scored three shots on goal in addition to his presentation and also introduced Reus’ first goal with a good direct shot. This offensive game was too much for Nuremberg. Even double scorer Kevin Volland did not come close to the values of Bruun Larsen and Pulisic, he landed in fourth place, still behind Schalke’s Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Of course, whoever is in the game with a 7:0 man also belongs in the SPIX eleven: Marco Reus scored two goals and put up the goal by Hakimi, gave another goal and two more closures. And he only needed 62 minutes and 45 ball actions for all that. The captain’s performance was impressive. If he stays fit this year, he will undoubtedly be a decisive factor for the BVB’s season.
Dortmund played very flexibly in the offensive, so Reus can also be seen as a striker, depending on his interpretation. The SPIX, however, considers Maximilian Philipp the only top player. He gave a template (before the 2:0 by Reus), but remained even without a goal. And so two Gladbachers form the attack. Alassane Pléa and Thorgan Hazard both scored a goal in their third home win in the third game. Hazard also prepared six shots on goal, including a 3-1 corner submission. Pléa, on the other hand, scored seven times – an enormously strong value. The SPIX squad will have ten fielders, not all of whom are Dortmunders, but all of whom are Borussians.
